As she explored whether dentistry was the right career for her, Emily Mattingly, D.D.S., worked as a dental assistant and front office receptionist at her father and grandfather’s dental practice.

Now, the dentist is a partner in that practice in Missouri.

“Working in these roles solidified my desire to become a dentist,” Dr. Mattingly said. “I witnessed firsthand the transformation in patients' confidence and health, which reinforced my commitment to pursue a career where I could make such a significant difference.”

She spent two years as an assistant and one as a receptionist, primarily before dental school.

“These experiences provided me with a solid foundation for school, giving me practical insights into the daily operations of a dental practice and helping me understand the patient care continuum from both a clinical and administrative perspective,” she said.

In these roles, Dr. Mattingly developed strong communication skills and learned how to make patients feel comfortable and cared for, she said. She also gained administrative skills related to scheduling appointments, processing insurance and managing patient records, as well as hands-on experience with dental procedures, instruments and infection control protocols.

Dr. Mattingly’s time as a team member has also helped her to be an empathetic and respectful employer who understands the challenges and responsibilities associated with each role within her practice, she said. She encourages communication and collaboration among staff and seeks to provide clear guidance, training opportunities and support to ensure her team members feel valued and competent in their roles.

“Overall, my early career experiences not only prepared me for dental school but also shaped my approach to managing a dental practice and working effectively with my team to provide the best possible care for our patients,” Dr. Mattingly said.
