Dental Olympics kick off with Dental Jeopardy

Competition continues Oct. 19 with surprise contest, Final Jeopardy

...
Faceoff: Four dental school teams compete Oct. 18 in Dental Jeopardy as part of the third annual Dental Olympics at SmileCon in New Orleans.

The third annual Dental Olympics were anyone’s game after the first day of competition concluded Oct. 18 at SmileCon.

Four dental schools met up in New Orleans for a head-to-head battle over Dental Jeopardy that continued with a contest later that evening at the Bouncin’ at the Bayou Fest. The Dental Olympics will conclude with a surprise competition the morning of Oct. 19 and then the final rounds of Dental Jeopardy. The winner will be crowned at 1:30 p.m. in the ADA Hub of Dental Central.

“We’re so excited to see you all here. Also, I live above the Mason-Dixon Line, so I have no stake in what goes on as the impartial Yankee in the whole room,” joked Dental Jeopardy host Gabriel Holdwick, D.D.S., to the crowd of supporters there to cheer on their favorite Southern dental school.

Dr. Holdwick, the chair of the ADA New Dentist Committee, returned for his third year as host. He was joined by fellow New Dentist Committee member Camryn Bryant, D.D.S., who is serving as emcee of the Dental Olympics. Dr. Bryant represents District 12, which includes Louisiana, on the committee.

To kick things off, the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Dentistry took on the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry in trivia, which ended in a tie.

The University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry and University of Oklahoma Health Sciences College of Dentistry then faced off, with the University of Mississippi coming out one point ahead.

Trivia questions focused on dental anatomy, fixed prosthodontics, operative dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics and restorative dentistry.

The Dental Olympics are sponsored by Pacific Dental Services.
