ADA members' JADA subscriptions to go digital in 2025
Transition from print supports flexibility, sustainability
Aligning with the Association’s commitment to be sustainable and provide members with more flexible access to clinical content, ADA member subscriptions to The Journal of the American Dental Association will switch from print to digital in 2025.
“Our commitment to providing JADA readers with the highest-quality resources remains unchanged,” said JADA Editor-in-Chief Tim Wright, D.D.S. “With this shift to digital, our members will continue to enjoy full access to our journal's content, allowing them to stay at the forefront of dental research, clinical practice and innovations.”
Dr. Wright said the transition of JADA from print to digital offers new ways to deliver information, including through interactive content, videos and sound clips. Other benefits of the digital version include the convenience of accessing JADA on any device and a searchable archive of all journal issues.
The December issue will be the last print edition to be mailed to all ADA members, but they have the option to purchase a 12-issue subscription from the ADA Store for the limited-time member price of $28.95 using promo code “JADAPRINT” before Dec. 31. Without the code, the annual subscription for 2025 will cost $36.
Starting in January, a digital flip book mimicking the look of a printed journal will be emailed to members each month when the new issue of JADA publishes online.
“The pages flip and even make sounds like a page turning,” Dr. Wright said.
Tony Frankos, JADA publisher and ADA chief business products portfolio officer, said the transition to digital represents a significant milestone for the ADA, one that reflects not only the Association’s dedication to its members but also its commitment to the environment.
"We are excited about JADA’s transition from print to a fully digital subscription model beginning in the new year,” Mr. Frankos said. “This change not only modernizes our publication but also significantly reduces our environmental footprint. By eliminating print, we are taking a vital step toward sustainability, which is increasingly important to our members and the broader community. We look forward to continuing to serve the ADA community with relevant and timely research in this new format.”
Currently, Elsevier — the largest scientific publisher in the world — prints roughly 130,000 copies of JADA each month. The journal’s monthly print run is larger than Elsevier’s physical sciences division. According to the publisher, a reduction of 100,000 print copies per month is equal to an annual emission reduction of 700 metric tonnes of greenhouse gases. One tonne of gas can fill a typical-sized house.
ADA members can access JADA content at JADA.ADA.org with their ADA username and password. There, they can also set their article and issue alert preferences through a separate Elsevier login.
