Former ADA vice president dies at 75

Former ADA Vice President Brian Edward Scott, D.D.S., died Nov. 28 at the age of 75.

Dr. Scott served as vice president from 2012-14 and later as the director of the American Dental Political Action Committee.

A California native, he earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973 and his dental degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine in Cleveland in 1978, according to his obituary.

After dental school, Dr. Scott joined the Navy Dental Corps, serving on active duty from 1978-81. He continued his service in the Naval Reserves, retiring as a captain in 2000. In 1982, he joined Palo Alto Dental Group, where he practiced for 35 years until retiring in 2017.

Dr. Scott became active in the Mid-Peninsula Dental Society in 1983, serving on the board of directors for seven years and as president in 1996. In 2008, he became president of the California Dental Association, where he also served as a trustee for six years and on the executive committee for five years.

Dr. Scott is survived by his wife, Janice Scott, D.D.S.; his sons, Jeffrey (Cindy), Eric (Lecia) and Christopher (Jennifer); his sisters, Nancy (Bill), Dorie (Bill) and Susan; his brothers, Paul and Stephen (Bernadette); his stepchildren, Allen, Stephen (Vy) and Elise; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; many nieces and nephews; and his dogs, Dexter and Muffin.

A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Feb. 9, 2025, at the Tierrasanta Seventh-day Adventist Church, 11260 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego. Interment will follow at 10 a.m. the next day at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the California Dental Association Foundation.
