Four vie for treasurer office

House of Delegates will vote Oct. 22

The ADA House of Delegates will elect a new treasurer this fall to replace outgoing Treasurer Ted Sherwin, D.D.S., of Orange, Virginia, whose second three-year term will end at SmileCon in New Orleans.

Per ADA Bylaws, the treasurer may hold the office for two consecutive three-year terms.

Voting will take place Oct. 22.

Each candidate’s curriculum vitae was provided to members of the ADA House of Delegates.

Brief biographies of each candidate follow (in alphabetical order):

Cody C. Graves, D.D.S.

Dr. Graves, a general dentist from Goldthwaite, Texas, is a past president of the Texas Dental Association and served as its secretary/treasurer for seven years. He was also chair of the budget and finance committee for the Texas Dental Association and secretary/treasurer, vice president and president of 21-B, Heart of Texas Local Component Society.

Dr. Graves obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin and received his D.D.S. degree from the Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry. He also holds an MBA from St. Edward’s University. Dr. Graves was a member of the ADA Strategic Forecasting Task Force and served on the ADA Finance Service Task Force. He is chair of the 15th District delegation for the House of Delegates and chair of Reference Committee A. In addition, Dr. Graves has been serving on the board of MC Bank for 18 years and is currently vice chair. 

David J. Manzanares, D.D.S.

Dr. Manzanares is a general dentist in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and is currently the vice president of the ADA Board of Trustees. He served as secretary/treasurer of the New Mexico Dental Association and the Southwest District Dental Society and was the director of the New Mexico Dental Association Foundation board of directors. 

He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico and his D.D.S. from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. Dr. Manzanares is the dental director at Presbyterian Medical Services, Sandoval County Dental Commons and an associate dentist at the office of Scott Miltenberger, D.M.D. Dr. Manzanares currently serves on the ADA Finance Committee and has previously served on the New Mexico Dental Association’s budget committee and its investment committee. He also served on the ADA Advisory Committee on Annual Meetings and the ADA Council on Communications.

Peter C. Shatz, D.D.S.

Dr. Shatz is a periodontist in Atlanta, consulting with Pacific Dental, Midtown Smiles, Dogwood Dental and Imagix Dental. He has worked in private, small group and large group practice settings. He has published numerous articles and lectures on periodontal and implant surgery. He completed his bachelor’s degree, D.D.S. and general practice residency at McGill University and specialized in periodontics at Louisiana State University. His MBA is from Louisiana State University, Shreveport.

Dr. Shatz is the vice president of the Georgia Dental Association and has been on or chaired numerous committees, including the board of trustees, finance and third-party payor task force. He served as editor, secretary, treasurer and president of the Northwestern District Dental Society. He served on the ADA Advisory Committee on Annual Meetings and has been in the 5th District Delegation to the ADA since 2017.

Howard M. Zolot, D.M.D.

Dr. Zolot is a periodontist who practices in North Andover, Massachusetts. He is the former president, vice president and treasurer of the Massachusetts Dental Society and served as president of the Merrimack Valley Dental Society. Dr. Zolot was the chair of the Massachusetts Dental Society’s investment subcommittee and its task force for the implementation of a debt repayment program for dentists in Massachusetts.

Dr. Zolot earned his bachelor’s, master’s and dental degrees from Farleigh Dickinson University. He did his specialty training at Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and was a clinical instructor in the department of periodontology and oral biology. He served on the American Academy of Periodontology’s audit committee; the ADA’s budget and finance committee; and the Massachusetts Dental Society’s budget and fiscal planning committee.
