3 things you missed in government this week

Tariffs, Medicaid/CHIP, health policy priorities

...

“Three Things You Missed in Government This Week” is designed to offer a way to stay informed on the topics of the week. These brief updates are meant to offer brief details on legislative or regulatory topics to keep dentists engaged and up to date. To explore the ADA’s latest advocacy efforts, more information is available at ADA.org/Advocacy.

1.     The ADA and other dental industry groups warned President Donald Trump in a letter that tariffs on dental products could increase costs and limit the availability of essential supplies for dental care in the U.S. In the letter, the ADA, the Dental Trade Alliance and the National Association of Dental Laboratories urge the Trump administration to exclude medical devices and other critical supplies used in dentistry from additional duties and to roll back existing tariffs on these products.

2.     The ADA signed on to a Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program support letter that highlights the essential role of these programs in providing health coverage to millions of Americans. The letter, which was organized by the Medicaid Health Plans of America, urges Congress to continue strengthening both programs in the years to come. The letter notes that more than 37 million children receive health coverage through Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, representing 47.4% of overall program enrollment.

3.     ADA leaders highlighted several key health policy issues they believe should be prioritized during the Trump administration. In a comprehensive letter to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, they emphasized the Association’s support for community water fluoridation, expansion of Medicaid adult dental coverage and the independence of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.
