The ADA announced March 6 a new affiliation with the Academy of Private Dental Practice, a group dedicated to advancing private practice through relationship-based care, peer support and leadership development.

Through this relationship, the ADA will enhance its support of dentists in private practice with relevant resources, training opportunities and practice management tools. ADA President Brett Kessler, D.D.S., and APDP President Julie Spaniel, D.D.S., announced the collaboration at APDP’s annual event.

“The ADA is proud to support dentists across all practice modalities, and our collaboration with APDP is a significant step in that direction,” Dr. Kessler said. “Private practice comes with considerations far beyond the clinical skills learned in dental school, including everything from leading a thriving team to managing finances. By working together, our Association and APDP will enhance the resources and tools available to dentists, helping them build strong practices that keep our communities healthy.”

The Academy of Private Dental Practice was founded in 1956 by a group of 29 dentists who recognized the need for greater collaboration in becoming effective business owners. At the time, numerous courses focused on clinical excellence, but no organization was dedicated to guiding dentists in efficient business ownership, said Dr. Spaniel, who also serves on the ADA Council on Communications. From the group’s inception, its relationship with the ADA was kept in mind.

“Our original meeting minutes stated that we were to ‘act as a guiding agency to disseminate dental education regarding business ownership in keeping with the broad principles of the American Dental Association,’” Dr. Spaniel said. “A fundamental requirement for APDP membership in 1956 was a minimum of eight years of American Dental Association membership. This underscores the intent of our founders nearly 70 years ago — to align with the ADA not only in professional standards but in shared values, including the importance of preserving the doctor-patient relationship.”
