ADA: Urge Congress to protect dentists from unfair tax hike
Association sends Grassroots Alert on Ways and Means tax bill

The ADA issued a Grassroots Alert on May 16, urging members to contact their representatives in Congress to oppose a provision in the House Ways and Means Committee tax bill that would negatively impact dentists.
The committee recently advanced a tax bill including a provision that would eliminate federal deductibility for state-level pass-through entity taxes by certain service professions, including dentists. The ADA said the move “unfairly targets small business dental practices” in the alert, which was signed by Jim Schulz, ADA senior vice president of government and public affairs.
“This would result in a new tax increase on dentists who own or are partners in practices structured as S corporations or partnerships, especially in high-tax states,” the alert said, adding that approximately 30% of dentists nationally would be directly impacted.
According to the ADA, this provision would reduce parity between pass-through businesses and large corporations; penalize health care providers in the midst of rising operating costs; and jeopardize reinvestment in staffing, technology and patient care — especially in rural or underserved areas.
The Grassroots Alert, which comes amid the ongoing budget reconciliation process, urged members to call or email their representatives and tell them to oppose the tax increase. The ADA previously commented on tax provisions in the reconciliation legislation ahead of the Ways and Means markup.
