CDT 2026 boasts 60 code changes, including 31 additions.

Below is information to help prepare dentists to use some of these new codes come Jan. 1, 2026. More details, including the numbers, nomenclatures and descriptors for the codes, are available in CDT 2026.

Point-of-care saliva testing

Technology has advanced to allow dentists to perform point-of-care saliva analysis without needing to send the samples to a laboratory. With this new code, dentists can precisely document the delivery of this service.

Testing for cracked tooth

This code covers comprehensive testing to multiple teeth aimed at locating a crack and eliminating other disorders that mimic the symptoms of a cracked tooth. The testing is typically done when a patient lets a dentist know there is an issue. The code allows for clear documentation and reporting to communicate this type of testing was performed.

Duplicate denture

These codes — one code for the maxillary arch and one for the mandibular arch — are for when a patient requests the fabrication of a backup denture. They clearly document when a duplicate denture is made by using the existing molds and casts, meaning those steps do not need to be repeated; by scanning and 3D-printing the existing denture; or by doing a combination of these techniques.

Scaling and debridement for treatment of implant with peri-implantitis

This code is used when an implant with peri-implantitis is treated without surgical flap entry and closure.

Cleaning and inspection of occlusal guard

When patients present with their existing occlusal guard for cleaning and inspection, this code will allow for the distinct documentation of this service, which is offered in virtually every dental practice on a frequent basis.

The CDT 2026 and Coding Companion Kit is available for purchase at ADAStore.org.

For the first time, the ADA is also offering a continuing education series to explain some of the changes coming to CDT 2026. The 2026 CDT Codes: Clinical Practice Series includes eight on-demand courses that give a comprehensive look into the structure, maintenance and ongoing updates of CDT codes. Two of the courses — Modern Diagnosis and Management of the Cracked Tooth and Scaling & Debridement of Single Implants with Peri-Implantitis — cover the procedures associated with codes mentioned above in more detail.

The eight courses can be purchased individually or as a bundle at ADAStore.org.
