Search for ADA executive director progresses
Board of Trustees to consider candidates at March meeting
The search for the American Dental Association’s next executive director continues to progress, with more than 200 applicants expressing interest in the role and 15 qualified candidates considered by the Executive Director Search Committee over the course of the search. The Board of Trustees in March will discuss and consider no more than 4 final candidates.
“We are conducting a robust search to find the most qualified candidate to meet the needs of our members and shepherd the ADA’s valuable work of advancing the dental profession and the oral and overall health of the public,” said ADA President Richard Rosato, D.M.D. “I commend how thorough and deliberate the search committee has been throughout this process, and I look forward to welcoming the next executive director when the search has concluded.”
Over the summer of 2025, after reviewing several requests for proposals, the ADA retained Russell Reynolds & Associates (RRA), a global leadership advisory firm with over 50 years’ experience, to conduct the search. Oversight of the search firm is provided by the Executive Director Search Committee which was established in Q1 2025.
The executive director is responsible for shaping and delivering a strong value proposition to ADA members, maintaining an unwavering focus on their needs and interests. This leader thinks strategically, effectively assesses and manages risks, and achieves positive results even in the face of adversity.
Additionally, in partnership with the treasurer and finance committee of the Board of Trustees, the executive director is responsible for financial stewardship, anticipating and managing budget expenditures, and making recommendations for adjustments as needed. The role includes implementing business development initiatives to grow non-dues revenue, within a well-considered risk-benefit framework.
The successful candidate for the role will ideally possess an undergraduate degree, with an advanced degree preferred, though this is not required; and at least 15 years of leadership experience within a similarly complex health care or membership organization with demonstrated expertise in providing strategic organizational leadership.
Interim Executive Director Elizabeth Shapiro, D.D.S., J.D., has led ADA operations since the Board of Trustees named her to the position on Feb. 8, 2025. Previously, Dr. Shapiro served as the ADA chief of governance and strategy.
The ADA will provide an official announcement when the executive director selection has been made, and will continue to provide pertinent updates to its membership in the meantime as feasible.
