ADA voices support for reintroduction of Promoting Dental Health Act

...

The ADA supports legislation reintroduced in the U.S. Senate that would extend federal support for oral health initiatives nationwide.

In a March 17 letter to Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., the ADA thanked him for introducing the Promoting Dental Health Act, which would reauthorize the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Oral Health Program and related activities through 2031. The measure would continue federal investments that help states monitor oral health trends and implement evidence-based prevention strategies.

The CDC’s Oral Health Program supports a range of dental public health initiatives aimed at preventing cavities, gum disease and other chronic and inflammatory conditions. The program provides funding and technical assistance to state and territorial health departments, helping them track disease prevalence and implement targeted interventions.

“Oral health is inseparable from overall health, and strengthening support for oral health initiatives is critical to reducing the prevalence of cavities, periodontitis, and other chronic and inflammatory conditions,” said ADA President Richard Rosato, D.M.D. “Smart public health strategies work hand in hand with dental professionals to prevent disease before it starts and expand access to care. The ADA commends Senator Durbin for his leadership in keeping oral health a national priority and ensuring states have the resources they need to protect the health of their communities.”

According to the ADA, investments through the CDC program have helped health departments develop and improve community water fluoridation systems and expand dental sealant programs that benefit low-income children. The agency has also developed infection control guidelines to protect dental patients, supported specialty training for dental public health professionals and funded public education campaigns promoting good oral hygiene.

In addition, CDC-administered public health data systems help policymakers and stakeholders better understand oral health trends and direct resources where they are needed most.

The ADA noted that strengthening support for the CDC Oral Health Program remains critical to advancing disease prevention and improving oral health nationwide.
