The ADA is welcoming Jonathan Burke, D.M.D., as the new director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, or NIDCR.

In a Sept. 21 news release, the ADA congratulated Dr. Burke on his appointment and said it looks forward to working with him and the NIDCR team to support dental, oral and craniofacial research.

Dr. Burke is a practicing dentist and board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with clinical, academic and leadership experience in craniofacial care. The ADA said his background in patient care and craniofacial health provides perspective as NIDCR continues its work to advance dental, oral and craniofacial research.

“We congratulate Dr. Burke on his selection to lead the nation’s prestigious medical research agency. We appreciate his leadership and contributions to the professional community, including his work to promote and advance research that improves oral health,” said ADA President Richard Rosato, D.M.D.

The ADA described NIDCR as the federal government’s leading agency for dental, oral and craniofacial research. According to the release, the Association plans to work with Dr. Burke and the institute to support scientific discovery, innovation and research aimed at advancing scientific understanding and translating discoveries into improved prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

“We are committed to fostering strong partnerships that help translate research into improved treatment of oral and craniofacial diseases and conditions,” Dr. Rosato said.

The ADA also thanked Jennifer Webster-Cyriaque, D.D.S., Ph.D., for her leadership and stewardship of NIDCR during the transition period and for her continued contributions to dental, oral and craniofacial research.

The Association said it is committed to working with Dr. Burke and NIDCR to advance oral health research, expand its impact and improve oral health outcomes.
