2 more cases of bird flu in Colorado
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported two additional cases of the H5N1 avian influenza, or bird flu, among farm workers in Colorado.
According to the CDC, four cases of bird flu were previously confirmed in Colorado. The new cases arose after two farm workers were exposed to poultry infected with the virus. In response to the cases, the CDC has deployed a team of epidemiologists, veterinarians, clinicians and industrial hygienists to assess and manage the outbreak in Colorado.
Although the CDC emphasized that there is currently a low risk of infection in the general population, more research is needed to better understand the occupational risks of farm workers exposed to the virus.
