2023-24 school year: Vaccination coverage drops, exemptions rise

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided insights into national and state-level vaccination coverage and exemptions among U.S. kindergartners during the 2023-24 school year.

The agency reported that the rate of vaccinations among this population declined for all vaccines compared with the 2022-23 school year. Further, vaccine coverage for measles, mumps and rubella as well as diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis dropped in 30 states — representing a high number of kindergartners entering the schooling system without complete vaccine coverage.

In addition, the CDC found that exemptions from one or more vaccines increased in 40 states during the 2023-24 school year compared with the prior school year.
