Addition of adjunctive cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel to minimally invasive nonsurgical technique
Researchers have evaluated the efficacy of administering adjunctive cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel alongside a minimally invasive nonsurgical technique in patients undergoing treatment for moderate intrabony defects.
In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, the researchers randomly assigned 42 patients with interdental intrabony defects to undergo either a minimally invasive nonsurgical technique with or without the adjunctive delivery of cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel.
After a follow-up of six months, the researchers found that the patients experienced improvements in probing depth, clinical attachment level and bleeding on probing but not gingival recession. Although the patients who received the adjunctive treatment experienced positive probing depth, clinical attachment level and defect fill changes at three months, there were no statistically significant differences in the clinical parameters as well as radiographic defect angle changes between the patient groups treated with or without the hyaluronic acid gel at six months.
The researchers concluded that the addition of adjunctive cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel to a minimally invasive nonsurgical technique offered primarily short-term benefits in this patient population.
