ADHD presentation in men, women

...

A study may have uncovered differences in the presentation of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder between men and women.

In the study, published in European Psychiatry, investigators examined sex-based differences in the severity of ADHD and functional outcomes among 900 adult patients.

Compared with male participants, female participants had more severe ADHD, depression and anxiety; poorer functioning and delayed diagnosis. Female participants were also more likely to experience disability. However, male participants had a higher risk of alcohol, tobacco and cannabis use.

The investigators hope their findings can help improve the diagnosis of ADHD and lead to more targeted interventions in this patient population.
