Advancing tooth-whitening treatment strategies
Tooth-whitening techniques have proved effective at treating patients with tooth discoloration.
In a review published in Odontology, investigators have examined recent developments in the understanding of tooth discoloration and provided an overview of the efficacy and adverse effects of tooth-whitening techniques.
The investigators detailed that tooth whitening is resultant from a redox reaction of oxides in the whitening reagent. Nonetheless, many patients experience tooth sensitivity as well as gingival irritation and recession following treatment. The investigators suggested that clinicians monitor patients for these adverse effects and perform steps to protect oral soft tissues during the procedure. For instance, low-concentration and low-acidity agents could reduce tooth microhardness loss and enamel surface roughness.
Further, spacing out tooth-whitening cycles and combining tooth-whitening treatment with remineralization agents could help protect patients from adverse effects while achieving the desired esthetic results. More natural tooth-whitening products should be developed to minimize the risk of these common adverse effects.
The investigators hope their findings can establish a basis for the clinical treatment of tooth discoloration.
