Agencies target illegal e-cigarettes
The Justice Department and Food and Drug Administration are joining with multiple law enforcement partners to create a federal multi-agency task force that will combat the illegal distribution and sale of e-cigarettes.
To date, the FDA has authorized the sale of 23 tobacco-flavored e-cigarette products and devices. These are the only e-cigarette products that may be lawfully marketed and sold in the U.S.
The 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey found about 2.1 million youths use e-cigarettes. Nicotine poses unique dangers to young people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In addition to being highly addictive, nicotine can harm the developing adolescent brain. Young people who use nicotine may also be at risk for becoming addicted to other drugs.
