AI vs. clinician assessment of endodontic treatment outcomes

An artificial intelligence-based platform could help examine the outcomes of endodontic treatment.
In a retrospective study published in the Journal of Endodontics, researchers compared the accuracy of an AI-based platform with experienced endodontists in evaluating the endodontic treatment of 376 teeth on periapical radiographs. They selected cone-beam computed tomography scans as the reference standard.
The researchers found that compared with the endodontists, the AI-based platform had higher sensitivity and lower specificity at the tooth and root levels as well as comparable overall accuracy at the tooth level and lower overall accuracy at the root level.
Despite the potential efficacy of the AI-based platform in periapical radiograph evaluation, the researchers concluded that clinicians should still be involved in assessment to prevent overdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment.
