Appendicitis declines worldwide
The incidence and mortality rates of appendicitis may be declining globally, according to a study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology.
In the study, investigators examined the burden of appendicitis globally, regionally and nationally between 1990 and 2021. They found that the incidence, mortality, years of life lost, years lived with disability and disability-adjusted life-years related to appendicitis decreased globally during the study period.
However, the incidence and mortality rates of appendicitis were still high among high-income Asia Pacific and central Latin American countries, respectively.
The findings indicated continuous progress in reducing the overall burden of appendicitis but indicated a need to improve access to health care in certain regions.
