Biden's student loan plan gets record number of public comments

Since publishing his student debt relief proposal in the Federal Register in April, President Joe Biden has received more than 34,000 public comments. The last day to comment is May 17.

According to higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz, this is a record when it comes to previous comment counts on student aid regulations.

The proposal, which is more targeted than the initial effort the Supreme Court previously blocked, has garnered comments ranging from extreme support to staunch opposition. One commenter called the proposal "an unjust burden on Americans who did not go to college or have paid off their student loan debt," while another commenter said it would be "a step towards rectifying long-standing inequities, centuries of compounded interest and empowering a significant segment of our society to achieve true economic participation and security."
