What does it mean if your gums bleed during pregnancy?

This symptom affects up to 75% of pregnant individuals, largely due to hormonal changes that increase sensitivity to plaque and bacteria, according to Parents.com. Known as pregnancy gingivitis, the condition can cause swollen, tender and bleeding gums — especially during brushing or flossing. While usually mild, experts stress that it should not be ignored.

Sandip Sachar, D.D.S., a member of the ADA, said poor oral hygiene during pregnancy can lead to more serious conditions like periodontitis and may increase the risk of pregnancy complications. Experts also warn that oral bacteria can potentially affect the baby, with links found between poor oral health and outcomes such as preterm birth, low birth weight and preeclampsia.

Routine dental cleanings are both safe and recommended during pregnancy. The ADA and OB-GYN experts emphasize maintaining regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups. Dietary changes and morning sickness can further affect dental health, so adjustments like rinsing with water and using smaller toothbrush heads may help, Dr. Sachar said.
