Bone characteristics in patients with autoimmune diabetes, overweight
Adiposity may be predictive of aspects of bone health in patients with autoimmune diabetes.
In a pilot study published in Diabetes/Metabolism Research and Reviews, researchers used dual X-ray absorptiometry to examine the body mass composition, bone mineral density, trabecular bone scores and structural geometric parameters of the femur in a group of more than 100 adult participants with autoimmune diabetes who had either overweight or normal weight.
The researchers identified inverse associations between total fat percentages and both bone strength and geometric features. Further, those who had excess fat mass — particularly visceral adipose tissue — were more likely to exhibit poorer hip bone strength and geometry at the site of the femoral shaft.
The findings highlighted the adverse effects of excess fat mass on bone health in patients with autoimmune diabetes.
