Breakfast choices could worsen cardiometabolic health

Poor breakfast habits could increase the risk of adverse cardiometabolic outcomes in older adults.

In a study published in The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, investigators examined the cardiometabolic outcomes of 383 participants with metabolic syndrome on the basis of breakfast habits.

After a follow-up of 36 months, the investigators discovered that the risk of adverse outcomes was greater in the participants who consumed either low or high daily energy intake at breakfast and those who consumed low-quality breakfasts. Low daily energy intake at breakfast and poor-quality breakfast were both associated with increased waist circumference, elevated triglyceride levels and reductions in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels.

The findings highlighted the need for healthy breakfast recommendations among older adults with metabolic syndrome.
