Broccoli vs. blood pressure

Consuming cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower may help reduce blood pressure.

In the VESSEL study published in BMC Medicine, researchers randomly assigned 18 patients aged 56 to 72 years with mild hypertension to follow a diet of four servings of cruciferous vegetables or root and squash vegetables daily for two weeks. They then measured the patients’ ambulatory blood pressure and cardiovascular risk factors.

The researchers found that the patients who followed the cruciferous vegetable intervention had lower 24-hour systolic blood pressure and serum triglyceride levels compared with those who followed the root and squash vegetable intervention.

Despite the positive findings, further studies are needed to better understand the benefits of consuming cruciferous vegetables in patients with mild hypertension.
