Burden of long COVID after two years in children

In a study published in Communications Medicine, investigators used data from the National Long COVID in Children and Young People study to examine symptoms of long COVID among 12,632 patients aged 11 to 17 years who tested positive or negative for COVID-19 infections between September 2020 and March 2021.

After a follow-up of three, six, 12 and 24 months, the investigators found that more than 7% of the patients experienced a median of five to six symptoms. Further, 20% to 25% of the participants reported three or more symptoms after 24 months and 10% to 25% of them reported five or more symptoms. Those who were reinfected with the COVID-19 virus experienced a greater number of symptoms compared with those who didn’t experience reinfections.

The findings indicated that tailored interventions may help address the physical and mental health issues experienced by children with long COVID. Further studies may be needed to develop diagnostic tools and potential treatment options.
