Can AI help interpret dental images?
The proliferation of digital radiographic dental images may create an opportunity for artificial intelligence to aid clinicians in diagnostic interpretations.
In a systematic review published in Cureus, investigators used the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases to identify seven studies from 2005 to 2024 that were focused on whether AI, particularly machine- and deep-learning models, could improve dental image analysis.
The investigators found that compared with standard interpretative methodology, AI models were capable of supporting several diagnostic processes. The investigators emphasized that clinician expertise is still critical in the diagnostic interpretation of dental images; however, they noted that AI models could improve the efficiency of diagnostic workflows in dental radiology. Further studies are needed to validate the results of the study prior to widespread adoption in clinical settings.
