Can personalized infographics alter smoking cessation outcomes in COPD care?

...

Researchers examined the potential benefit of delivering an infographic detailing the potential personalized risks of the continuation of smoking in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In an article in press published in BMC Pulmonary Medicine, the researchers provided personalized biomedical risk assessment infographics predicting future declines in lung function to just over 100 patients with COPD and current smoking status and compared smoking cessation outcomes with a preintervention group of nearly 90 patients who underwent standard care.

Compared with the participants in the preintervention group, the researchers found that the participants in the intervention group who received the infographic were more likely to receive brief counseling on smoking cessation, pharmacotherapy to encourage smoking cessation and changes in respiratory drugs despite just over 50% of them successfully receiving the infographic.

The findings demonstrated the potential role a predictive infographic may play in improving COPD outcomes.
