Can the Mediterranean diet benefit cancer survivors?

The Mediterranean diet may help cancer survivors improve survival, according to a study published in JACC: CardioOncology.

Although the diet has been shown to reduce the risk of developing cancer, there have been few studies exploring its benefit in patients who have already received cancer diagnoses.

In the study, the investigators examined the dietary habits and outcomes of 802 patients who had been diagnosed with cancer prior to enrollment between 2005 and 2010. Compared with those who had low adherence, the investigators discovered that the patients who had high adherence to the Mediterranean diet had a 32% and 58% reduced risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular-related mortality, respectively.

With the increasing number of cancer survivors, the investigators emphasized that physicians should consider dietary interventions such as the Mediterranean diet as strategies to decrease the risk of mortality among cancer survivors.
