Can walnuts reduce obesity, improve weight management?

The consumption of walnuts may be linked to a lower risk of obesity among adolescents and young adults.

In a cross-sectional study published in Current Development in Nutrition, investigators analyzed the data of 8,874 individuals aged 12 to 19 years and 10,323 individuals aged 20 to 39 years. The participants were categorized based on their nut consumption: walnuts only, walnuts along with other tree nuts, other tree nuts or no nuts.

Compared with those in the no nuts group, the adolescent females and young women in the walnuts along with other tree nuts group had a lower risk of obesity. Further, adolescent females in the other tree nuts group and young women in the walnuts-only group had a lower risk of obesity compared with those in the no nuts group. Among all of the study participants, the prevalence of obesity was lowest in the walnuts along with other tree nuts group for adolescents and young adults compared with the no nuts group. Those in the walnuts along with other tree nuts group had higher diet quality scores and healthier lifestyle factors overall.

The investigators concluded that further studies may be needed to explore whether consuming a combination of walnuts and other tree nuts may benefit weight management.
