CDC ends emergency response to bird flu

...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the end of its emergency response to H5N1 bird flu, citing a decline in animal infections and no reports of human cases in months.

The agency said that surveillance and response for bird flu cases will continue under the purview of its influenza division, according to Reuters. The CDC’s bird flu updates were merged with routine updates for seasonal influenza.

The move comes after the H5N1 bird flu response was activated in April 2024, ultimately infecting 70 people, most of which were farm workers. One person died over the past year as the virus spread among cattle herds and poultry flocks.

The CDC said the current public health risk from H5N1 bird flu remains low and that it will continue to monitor the situation.
