CDC: Hospitalizations linked to chikungunya vaccine

...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported five hospitalizations following chikungunya vaccinations.

The hospitalizations, related to adverse cardiovascular and neurologic effects, occurred among U.S. patients aged 65 years and older who received vaccines protecting against the chikungunya virus, according to a news article from CNN. Individuals traveling to regions with a high risk of exposure to mosquitos infected with the virus are often advised to receive the chikungunya vaccine.

The vaccine’s manufacturer stated that it is working with the CDC on its investigation and maintained that the company had not identified safety signals in its postmarketing safety monitoring. The agency is working to establish whether the relationship between the hospitalizations and the vaccinations is causal or coincidental.

As a result of the hospitalizations, the CDC recommended that health care providers discuss the benefits and risks of receiving the chikungunya vaccine with their patients. Individuals who have potentially been exposed to the chikungunya virus should watch for symptoms, including headaches, fevers, joint pain or swelling, muscle pain and rashes.
