CDC warns of deadly new mpox strain

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an alert for clinicians to be on the lookout for a new, potentially fatal strain of mpox spreading throughout parts of Africa.

The current outbreak, which started in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is more widespread than any previous outbreak in the area and has resulted in clade I mpox transmission to some neighboring countries, according to the agency.

Thus far, no cases of clade I mpox have been reported outside of eastern Africa, but because there may be a risk of additional spread, the CDC recommended that “clinicians and jurisdictions in the United States maintain a heightened index of suspicion for mpox in patients who have recently been in” the Democratic Republic of the Congo or to any country sharing a border with it.
