City poised to resume fluoridating water

The Buffalo Water Authority will return fluoride to the city’s water supply by August, the agency told the city’s common council in March.

The announcement signaled the end of a nearly decade-long period during which city residents did not have tap water with fluoride, which prevents tooth decay. 

The Buffalo News investigated the situation and revealed the fluoridation program had been quietly terminated for nearly a decade, raising alarms in the dental and medical community.
