Colgate to revamp toothpaste packaging after Texas official’s fluoride concerns

Colgate-Palmolive will change its toothpaste packaging and marketing after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton raised concerns that images showing large swirls of toothpaste could encourage parents to give children under 6 unsafe amounts of fluoride.

Starting Nov. 1, the company’s Colgate, Tom’s of Maine, and hello brands will display “pea-sized” portions of toothpaste in their imagery, consistent with label instructions. The updates will appear online first and later on store shelves. Mr. Paxton had launched investigations into Colgate and Procter & Gamble — maker of Crest — alleging their marketing promotes excessive fluoride use in children. The P&G case is still ongoing.

While fluoride is widely supported by the ADA for preventing cavities, some recent studies have questioned its safety, though critics dispute their findings.
