Combatting COVID-19 infections as fall approaches

Public health officials announced that they will offer free COVID-19 tests, vaccines and treatments to Americans in response to the high summer case numbers.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention predicted that COVID-19-related hospitalizations may be comparable or lower than in 2023, according to a news report from CNN. However, COVID-19 variants or higher cases of influenza could increase hospitalization estimates.

The CDC noted that updated COVID-19 vaccines will be made available in the coming months. The organization stressed that vaccines can help mitigate infections, lessen symptoms and decrease the risk of long COVID.

The news report detailed that local and state health departments will receive funding to provide free COVID-19 vaccines and free COVID-19 tests are expected to become available in late September. Americans will be permitted to order up to four tests per household. Further, the antiviral medication Paxlovid will be offered at no charge to Medicare or Medicaid beneficiaries and those who are uninsured.

The public health officials hope these initiatives can help limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
