Comparing surgical treatment techniques in peri-implantitis

...

Rotating titanium brushes may offer comparable efficacy to implantoplasty in patients with peri-implantitis.

In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, researchers randomly assigned 30 patients with peri-implantitis who were eligible for surgical treatment to undergo surface decontamination with either rotating titanium brushes or implantoplasty.

After a follow-up of 12 months, the researchers found that the rotating titanium brushes demonstrated noninferiority to implantoplasty across several clinical and radiographic parameters such as probing pocket depth. However, peri-implant marginal bone levels and treatment duration were more favorable in the rotating titanium brush group compared with the implantoplasty group.

The findings suggested that both treatment options may provide benefit in patients with peri-implantitis undergoing surgical treatment.
