Connection between flu, heart attacks explored
Adults aged 50 and older who had even a mild case of the flu were shown to have double the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke within two weeks after catching the virus, according to a seven-year research study.
The likelihood quadrupled in adults with preexisting health conditions who endured a severe case of the flu, with their risk lasting up to two months post-infection.
“This work reinforces the official recommendations for influenza prevention in at-risk groups and should also increase the awareness of even milder influenza infection and its possible complications in the general population,” researchers said.
