Cosmetic teeth whitening may be more popular than ever
Teeth whitening may be becoming more popular among younger populations. Up to 19% of Americans have whitened their teeth, according to a news report from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Compared with older Americans, people under 45 may be more likely to receive teeth whitening by twofold. Further, the teeth-whitening industry is expected to rise to $8.21 billion by 2026, up from $6.14 billion in 2020.
Teeth whitening involves the application of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide-based gels to the tooth surface, resulting in the chemical removal of stains. Dentists interviewed for the article emphasized that the procedure has been found to be safe, effective and affordable.
Individuals who desire to whiten their teeth may visit a dentist to receive in-office treatment or elect for at-home whitening products. Although over-the-counter teeth-whitening products may be less effective than in-office care, the dentists noted that the products are still safe and effective over longer periods of time.
