Could probiotics improve mood?

...

A probiotic intervention could help improve a negative mood.

In a study published in npj Mental Health Research, researchers randomly assigned 88 healthy adult volunteers to receive a probiotic mixture of nine bacterial strains or placebo for a period of 28 days. The participants completed questionnaires and a daily self-report regarding their mood and bowel symptoms.

Although there were no statistically significant differences in negative moods between the groups on the basis of the questionnaires, the researchers found that the participants who received the probiotic intervention experienced greater reductions in self-reported negative moods compared with those who received placebo.

The findings indicated that the probiotic intervention could help regulate the moods of healthy individuals.
