Counterfeit Botox raises alarm
Nine people have been hospitalized with botulism-like illness after receiving counterfeit or mishandled botulinum toxin injections — commonly known as Botox — for cosmetic purposes.
As of April 12, 19 people from nine states reported harmful reactions after receiving the injections from unlicensed and untrained individuals or in nonmedical settings.
Officials have found some people received injections with counterfeit products or products with unverified sources. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and several state and local health departments are investigating the sources of these products.
