Curbing gum inflammation with Mediterranean diet

...

Researchers have found that following a Mediterranean diet may help individuals improve their gingival health, according to a news article from Medical News.

In a study published in the Journal of Periodontology, researchers compared the effects of the Mediterranean diet on oral diseases and inflammation among 200 participants who provided blood samples, underwent dental examinations and completed questionnaires.

The researchers noted that the individuals who ate the plant-based foods associated with the Mediterranean diet — such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and olive oil — had a lower risk of severe gingival disease and lower levels of various inflammatory markers, compared with those who didn’t follow the diet.

The results indicated that the Mediterranean diet could help moderate inflammation and improve oral health.
