Dark chocolate may contain low levels of heavy metals

Certain dark chocolate and cocoa products may contain heavy metals like lead and cadmium that exceeded California’s limitations, according to an article published in The Washington Post.

Although the researchers said the levels of the heavy metals detected in the products was not alarming, consumers should be aware of their exposure. The researchers suggested that over time, consuming lead in various parts of the diet could lead to higher levels of lead in the blood, which can cause kidney dysfunction.

However, prior research has indicated that the flavonoids found in dark chocolate may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. The researchers commented that dark chocolate and other cocoa-containing products are a minor source of exposure to the contaminants because they are typically just a small component of the diet.
