DEA: Fentanyl-related deaths down
The Drug Enforcement Administration detailed a drop in fentanyl overdose-related deaths at the agency’s 2024 National Family Summit on Fentanyl.
The DEA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported a 14.5% decrease in fentanyl overdose-related deaths between June 2023 and June 2024 as well as a decrease in the percentage of fentanyl pills containing potentially lethal doses.
The DEA credited the enforcement of laws, education initiatives aimed at improving awareness of the dangers of fentanyl and increased access to naloxone with reversing the trend in fentanyl overdose-related deaths.
The agency hopes to continue preventing and responding to drug misuse, encouraging recovery programs and connecting individuals with the resources and treatment necessary to avoid drug overdoses.
