Dental, nursing students partner to practice patient exam skills

Marquette University hosted an interprofessional education (IPE) event that brought together students from the institution’s College of Nursing and School of Dentistry to receive education on monitoring vital signs and performing oral examinations.

The event involved a collaboration between students on proper intra-oral assessment techniques and pulse detection. The students engaged with one another by showcasing their educational experiences to learn from each other as they practiced monitoring vital signs, including pulse and blood pressure, and conducting oral examinations under faculty supervision.

Clinical faculty at the event explained that knowing how to monitor a patient’s vital signs is a critical medical emergency prevention skill for dental professionals, and they hope the event and the interdisciplinary environment provided students with the opportunity to improve their skill sets.
