Dental schools receive grants to study oral cancer treatments
The National Institutes of Health awarded multi-million-dollar grants to dental schools at NYU, Columbia and the University of Florida to support research of treatments for oral cancer as an alternative to opioids.
The funding is part of a National Institutes of Health initiative called Helping to End Addiction Long-Term, which aims to prevent and treat the overuse of opioids in the U.S.
According to NYU, which received an $8 million grant, researchers "will use the grant to develop small particles, also known as nano particles to help scientists study pain and how pain signals move throughout the body" as well as "observe how pain receptors released from tumors spread pain signals to other nearby cells."
