Dentist and scholar: Student pursues two doctoral degrees
A University of Michigan student is pursuing both a D.D.S. degree and a Ph.D. in oral health sciences. Ben Swanson will also use his experience at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business to further his interest in how entrepreneurs create companies to translate scientific discoveries into clinical care.
Mr. Swanson’s quest for a dual D.D.S.-Ph.D is shared by about half of the approximately 20 students in the dental school’s Ph.D. research program.
“I got the research bug and was curious: How do you become more involved in health care? How do you become more involved in what’s the latest and greatest in that area? You can be a follower, but how do you be a leader? I learned that there are people who balance both dentistry and research, so I began exploring Ph.D. options to go with dental training," Mr. Swanson said.
