Grant helps dentists fight against diabetes

The Hunt School of Dental Medicine received a grant from the Paso del Norte Health Foundation that will allow students and dentists in the region to check their patients for diabetes.

Diabetes is one of the largest health problems in the Paso del Norte region, with 13.9% of adults affected by the disease — a figure higher than both Texas and national averages. The $166,990 grant will expand the Diabetes and the Dentist program, which opened in February 2023, by giving more dentists in the area training and equipment to detect the disease.

“If you have diabetes, you also might have poor oral health,” said Salma Elwazeer, program co-director. “We thought, ‘Let’s try to implement testing patients to determine if they are developing diabetes.’”
