Dentists rail against county’s proposal not to fluoridate water

Union County commissioners advanced in February a measure to not put fluoride in water at the new Yadkin Treatment Plant, which will open shortly in North Carolina.

The commissioners said their decision is about medical freedom and consent.

Noah Menaker, D.D.S., disagrees, saying that research shows fluoride as proven to reduce caries.

He is anxious about the long-term effects of not having fluoride for the community.

“We’re part of a society and this is about thinking about the greater good,” he said. “As a dentist, I would much rather give good news. The best day is when we get to tell kids and parents they don’t have any cavities. A huge part of that is fluoride.”
