Despite benefits, water fluoridation threatened in some communities

Fluoridation prevents tooth decay, but there’s been pushback against it, including a lawsuit by anti-fluoridation advocates demanding that the federal government terminate the practice outright.

Some state lawmakers want to reverse requirements for communities to fluoridate, and several communities across the country in recent years have chosen to stop fluoridating the public water supply.

At least a dozen states have laws mandating that larger communities fluoridate.

But lawmakers in three of those states — Georgia, Kentucky and Nebraska — have filed bills that would reverse the mandates and leave the choice up to a local voter referendum or to the governing body of local water systems.
